Dukes Hotel in London, England

Tucked into a tiny alleyway off St. James' Place, Dukes Hotel is quintessential Britain – it dates from 1908, but the interior is modern and the atmosphere is convivial. Impressive oil paintings and dark antique furniture preside alongside brightly upholstered settees, and beds are renowned for being incredibly comfortable. You’ll want to down one of the martinis at Dukes Bar, said to be the inspiration behind James Bond's request for "shaken, not stirred."

Ask the doorman to direct you to the secret entrance of Green Park. Wander amid magical greenery and unpack a picnic basket of quiche and summery greens. Return for Gin and Tonic Afternoon Tea in the parlour, an affair that deliciously fuses two British traditions. Top off the evening meal with a Cuban cigar and glass of cognac in the secluded garden lounge.

Stopped in for a drink at this hotel's iconic bar. Reminded me what a wonderful place Dukes is. Have stayed here several times. In my view, it is the best hotel in the West End in London. Set in a small square just off Piccadilly, the hotel provides extreme comfort and exquisite service. I lingered in the bar hoping James Bond or George Smiley would pop in.

My sisters and I had Afternoon Tea at Duke's and it was a great experience! The food, tea, and champagne were delicious. I particularly enjoyed the scones. Anis was our waiter and he was friendly and charming. Two thumbs up would recommend.

I have to say I was underwhelmed by this hotel. Since visiting the cocktail bar, I'd always liked the look of this smart, tucked away seemingly quintessential hotel in St James, so when I was visiting London on business last month I thought I'd give it a try. The service was ok but not especially welcoming or warm . One of the attractions was the old building itself so when I was told I'd been upgraded to a junior suite, I was expecting a nice light and roomy room upstairs. However, having been navigated through a massive party of tourists, i was shown a perfectly comfortable but characterless long room in the downstairs annexe close to the restaurant. It was very difficult to see the tv. The room was next to a back street that was quite noisy, especially with bottle containers being cleared in the night. The person I was travelling with requested a massage detailed in the brochure at the stated tariff but was told this was not available and was quoted a price that was double. Not sure if the cocktail manager is told to look after hotel guests or their regular non - residents, but it's like he's doing you a favour. Overall a short stay, but saw enough not to be especially impressed. There are better old fashioned hotels in London offering real hospitality.

I attended a private dinner in the hotel. The atmosphere of the hotel is very smart and intemate with the strong smell coming from all the flowers in the public areas. The food was delicious and the service unabtrusive, friendly and efficient. Were I not already living in London, this would be the hotel I would want to stay in! I confess I always look at bad reviews and the only one star review I could find was someone complaining that he was refused entry In the evening to the Cocktail Bar as he was wearing a T shirt - that news made me like the hotel even more. If you are staying in a smart hotel don't look like a scruff but fear the reviewer did not get this message!

Having always wanted to try this hotel was pleasantly surprised to have my expectations lived up to. Lovely, friendly welcome. My room was gorgeous and spacious enough to relax. I loved that staff come in and put your slippers next to your bed! The bar was just fantastic. Had some business guests and they were really impressed with how relaxed and accommodating staff were. Simply the best Martini we have ever had. I am looking forward to returning.
